Yudhra Review: Siddhant Chaturvedi's Film Is Relentlessly Violent

Image
A boy born angry - very, very angry - grows up to be a young man prone to flying off the handle at the slightest pretext. He is rusticated from school for nearly killing a classmate. Years later, as a trainee cadet, he beats a man to pulp. Welcome to the world of the eponymous protagonist of Yudhra , a perpetually fuming guy whose revenge saga begins in the womb of his mother. She dies minutes before the boy is delivered. He carries the burden of that tragedy all through the film although, not surprisingly, it is only one-third of the way in that he learns of the circumstances of his birth. Residual anger frequently blows up into all-consuming fury. It causes the orphan (played by Siddhant Chaturvedi) much trouble and grief. His well-wishers, colleagues of his deceased police officer-father, have a hard time dealing with his meltdowns. There are points when his foster-father, Kartik Rathore (Gajraj Rao), his deceased father's friend in the police force, all but gives up on him.

Berlin Review: The Spy Drama Isn't A Run-Of-The-Mill Espionage Thriler

Secret agents have been Bollywood action movie staples for some years now. A handful of them played by Mumbai's biggest stars now constitute a full-fledged spy universe rustled up by the industry's leading production house. They are unlikely to disappear from the Hindi showbiz radar anytime soon. Should we be interested in a small, understated cinematic clone built around a bunch of spies who are no patch on the big boys of the game? The answer is yes. Berlin, written and directed by Atul Sabharwal, isn't a run-of-the-mill espionage drama. Not a stirring affair by any stretch of the imagination but a sobering cautionary tale of sorts, the film subverts the genre. If you warm up to it, you might find enough in here to keep you invested. Sabharwal's script disassembles the building blocks and creates, with the aid of subdued sleights and colours, a spy thriller that is far removed from the universe that the likes of Tiger and Pathaan inhabit. Berlin has limited star po
