"Blames One Community": Supreme Court Refuses Request For Manipur Probe

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a fresh PIL on the Manipur violence seeking among other things a SIT probe into alleged poppy cultivation and narco-terrorism. It asked for a "more specific" petition and said this one was "very difficult" to entertain because it blamed only one community. Senior advocate Madhavi Diwan, appearing for the petitioner Mayanglambam Bobby Meetei, sought to withdraw the plea and was allowed to do so. "This petition is very difficult to entertain because it places blame on one community," said the bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandcrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. "You can come with a more specific petition. This petition has everything from the violence to narcotics to deforestation," the bench said. Ms Diwan referred to cross-border terrorism and poppy cultivation in the state as responsible for the recent violence. The plea made the Narcotics Control Bureau, the National Inv

Ryanair Pilots' Strike In Belgium Cancels Nearly 100 Flights

A strike by Ryanair pilots in Belgium in an ongoing dispute over working conditions has cancelled 96 flights to and from Charleroi this weekend, the airport said, in the midst of the busy summer travel season. The industrial action will affect 17,000 passengers due to leave or land in the southern city, around 28 percent of the expected number of travellers, the airport's management told AFP. Pilots say the low-cost Irish airline is failing to honour a collective convention that sets time off work in exchange for salary cuts agreed in 2020 during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, which decimated the industry. The pilots' union said the company was failing to respect Belgian law and was prospering thanks to "social dumping" that creates unfair competition for other airlines that abide by the rules. Ryanair has previously called on the pilots to negotiate rather than strike and noted it had reached deals on working conditions with its Italian, French and Spani

Watch: "INDIA" vs "Modi" Chants Outshout S Jaishankar In Parliament

Parliament proceedings devolved to a contest of vocal reprisals once again on Thursday as the opposition and government lawmakers clashed in a cacophony of "INDIA, INDIA" and "Modi, Modi" slogans, claiming External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's address on the nation's foreign policy as a casualty. The opposition's outcry began with chants of "Manipur, Manipur", an effort to prioritise the three-month-long ethnic clashes in the northeastern state amid attempts to maintain business as usual in the upper house. As the slogans reverberated through the Rajya Sabha hall, contesting Mr Jaishankar's words, the treasury benches rose in unison, their chants of "Modi, Modi" a fervid endorsement of the Prime Minister. This was met with chants of "INDIA, INDIA" - the brand-savvy name of the opposition's new coalition. Mr Jaishankar's address, an attempt to shed light on the successes of India's foreign policy and Pri

"Opposition Should Allow Parliament To Function": Asaduddin Owaisi

AIMIM party chief Asaduddin Owaisi addressed the ongoing protests and disruptions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Thursday, calling for a return to order in parliament. His remarks came amid the adjournment of proceedings in both houses due to an impasse between the government and the opposition over the three-month-long violence in Manipur. "My opinion is that the opposition should allow the parliament to function," Mr Owaisi told NDTV. He asserted that the acceptance of the opposition's no-confidence motion against the government a day ago should be followed by a return to order.  Questioning the opposition's tactics, he said, "It's a fair point that now no-confidence has been accepted, then the house should be allowed to function. Opposition parties should answer this question." The parliamentarian expressed regret over the loss of precious parliamentary time due to the ongoing protests. "It's unfortunate that we have lost so many days

Review: Vijay Varma Leads The Charge In Understated Kaalkoot

Image
A rookie cop struggling to come to grips with the demands of a high-pressure job and its deleterious impact on his personal life is the central figure in Kaalkoot , an understated police procedural created by Arunabh Kumar and directed by Sumit Saxena. The eight-episode investigative drama series - it is streaming on JioCinema - is as much about an inquiry into a horrific acid attack outside a small-town college in Uttar Pradesh as about the scourge of patriarchy and putrid masculinity that infects the worldview of men charged with protecting the law. The opening episode of Kaalkoot , has a scene in which a bunch of policemen attend a gender sensitivity training programme. A few of them make snide remarks as the session is introduced. Their laidback attitude instantly reveals why the town has seen a spate of crimes against women.   The show also factors in domestic violence, homophobia, unsafe abortions, female infanticide, cybercrime, jilted lovers, depredations of corrupt and cynic
