Debut Role For UK's Minority Faiths At King Charles' Coronation

The UK's non-Christian faiths and its Celtic languages will play a prominent role for the first time in a royal coronation when King Charles III is crowned next week, organisers said on Saturday. The May 6 service at Westminster Abbey will be overwhelmingly drawn from the Christian liturgy as Charles takes an oath, in English, to serve as "Defender of the (Protestant) Faith" and to protect the established Church of England. But in a first, it will also feature a prominent role for Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jewish leaders, according to the order of service released by the office of Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. At the end of the coronation, they will deliver a greeting in unison to Charles declaring that "as neighbours in faith, we acknowledge the value of public service". "We unite with people of all faiths and beliefs in thanksgiving, and in service with you for the common good," they will say. Members of the House of Lords from

China Weighs Giving Single Women Access To IVF To Address Low Birth Rates

As China tries to slow its demographic decline, women like Chen Luojin could be part of the solution. The divorced 33-year-old lives in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern Sichuan province, which legalised registration of children by unmarried women in February, something China is considering implementing nationwide to address record low birth rates. The changes mean unmarried women can take paid maternity leave and receive child subsidies previously only available to married couples. Crucially, Chen could access in-vitro fertility (IVF) treatment legally in a private clinic. She is now 10 weeks pregnant. "Becoming a single parent is not for everyone, but I'm happy with the decision," said Chen, who works in logistics. "Equally, getting married or not is for each individual to decide. We have liberalised the policies here and I know a lot of single women are doing IVF." Concerned about China's first population drop in six decades and its rapid ageing,

Training guns on the Congress over its party chief Mallikarjun Kharge's 'venomous snake' barb at him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said till now that party and its leaders have hurled at him different types of abuses 91 times. Accusing the Congress of also abusing the dominant Lingayat community in poll-bound Karnataka, the Prime Minister further said the grand old party had even abused Babasaheb Ambedkar and were engaged in abusing Veer Savarkar. Hitting out at the Congress, PM Modi, on his first visit to the state for campaigning after elections were declared on March 29, said, people will respond to its abuses with votes, and as much mud they sling at BJP, the lotus will bloom. "The Congress hates everyone who speaks about the common man, who brings out their corruption, who attacks their politics of selfishness. Congress's hate against such people will become permanent. In this election too, the Congress once again has started abusing me," PM Mod

Watch: Huge Fire At Fuel Depot In Russia-Annexed Crimea After Drone Strike

A huge fire broke out on Saturday at a fuel depot in Sevastopol, the main port in Moscow-annexed Crimea, with authorities saying it was the result of a drone attack. Sevastopol is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet and has been hit by a series of drone attacks since the Kremlin's Ukraine offensive launched last year. "A fuel reserve is on fire in the Kazachya Bay district" of the city, the Moscow-installed governor of the peninsula Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Telegram in the early hours of Saturday. "According to preliminary information, it was caused by a drone strike." He said the fire's size was "around 1,000 square metres" and published images of huge clouds of smoke rising into the air. Razvozhayev called on Crimeans to "remain calm" and in a later post said "nobody was hurt." He said authorities had "the situation under control" and said there was no threat to civilian infrastructure. Earlier this week,

Parents In Pak Putting Padlocks On Daughters' Graves To Avoid Rape: Report

In a shocking revelation, parents in Pakistan now guard their dead daughters against rape by putting padlocks to their graves, reported Daily Times. Reports have revealed that necrophilia cases are on the rise in the country. That a woman is raped every two hours in a country taking great pride in its family-oriented values has been hammered to the point of repetition in our collective conscience. But the heart-wrenching sight of padlocks on the graves of females is enough for the entire society to hang its head in shame and never dare to look at the so-called vessels of honour, read Daily Times editorial. Harris Sultan, an ex-Muslim atheist activist and the author of the book "The Curse of God, why I left Islam" blamed hardline Islamist ideology for such depraved acts. "Pakistan has created such a horny, sexually frustrated society that people are now putting padlocks on the graves of their daughters to prevent them from getting raped. When you link the burqa with r

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: An Epic That Looks Primed To Stand The Test Of Time

Image
Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj Director: Mani Ratnam Rating: Four stars (out of 5) With the scale and spectacle of the first part intact in every respect, the Ponniyin Selvan follow-up is shorn of the information overload that made huge demands on those segments of the audience that were not familiar with the long and eventful history of the Chola dynasty. The two parts are roughly identical in length but they differ in the matter of how the plot is underwired. Ponniyin Selvan-2 (PS-2) feels far leaner and more briskly paced than its predecessor. Palpably more straightforward, the PS-2 narrative, a Tamil historical epic released nationwide in multiple languages, is much easier to grasp and savour. But like the first part, it is frequently eye-popping in terms of its visual grandeur. Mani Ratnam's measured directorial style ensures that the film is much more than just dazzling. It is consi

Celebs, Politicians Join Twitter's New Rival. Here's How You Can Do It Too

With Twitter mired in confusion over check marks, subscriptions and an ever-increasing number of seemingly haphazard decisions by the platform's owner Elon Musk, some users are searching for alternatives.   Many are looking no further than Bluesky, which has its own origins in Twitter and, to all intents and purposes, acts in a very similar fashion.  Its latest devotees include US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, writer-comedian Dril and model Chrissy Teigen. But for now it's invite only. The platform on Thursday said it had just experienced its biggest single-day jump in users yet. Here's everything you need to know about Bluesky - and how to get an all-important invite: What is Bluesky? On the outside, Bluesky is a platform with similar looks and features to Twitter - albeit simpler - allowing users to create a profile and post text and images. The real difference is under the hood. Instead of building a social platform like Twitter or Facebook, the Bluesky

Congress Compares Arvind Kejriwal With Sheila Dikshit Over 45-Crore Spend

The Congress on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party over the alleged expenditure of Rs 45 crore on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's official residence, saying it was "shameful" and it was like the party slapping its voters in the face. The Opposition party also addressed queries about it reaching out to the Aam Aadmi Party on one hand and attacking it on the other, saying there was "no good cop, bad cop" routine and both approaches can co-exist. Asked about Congress leader Ajay Maken attacking Arvind Kejriwal on one hand and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge reaching out to the party as part of Opposition unity efforts, party's media department head Pawan Khera said Mr Maken has said the right thing. Hitting out at the AAP, Mr Khera said, "You call yourself an ' aam aadmi (common man)', it is a different matter that nobody considers you an ' aam aadmi' now. During Covid when people were suffering and the

Australian Man Charged Double The Fare After He Falls Asleep In Taxi

A man in Australia was charged $468 (Rs 25,240) for a 75-kilometre trip after he fell asleep in a taxi. According to Australia's 7News , the man named Ryan had booked a cab for an hour-long journey from Melbourne Airport to the suburb of Berwick. The journey usually costs him $160 (Rs 8,632), but this time, he had to pay more than double the amount since he was not awake during the trip. To add to his ignominy, he found the fare increased to $486.72 (Rs 26,259) due to 'credit card fees'. Ryan posted a video on TikTok about the incident, which has gone viral on the platform. He also argued with the driver who defended the huge fare. "I just drive you from the airport. There's tolls on the way, there's a freeway," the taxi driver said, as per 7News . "I'm a new taxi driver. I just know what the meter is saying. How are you going to pay, buddy?" he further asked. Ryan said he fell asleep for "20-30 minutes" and again questioned the

Artificial Intelligence Discovers A New Planet Outside Our Solar System

Scientists have developed a new method that could revolutionise how they find and classify new planets that are very far away from Earth. They have detected an exoplanet using machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence. A recent study by the University of Georgia research team showed that machine learning can correctly determine if an exoplanet is present by looking in protoplanetary disks, the gas around newly formed stars. The newly published findings represent a first step towards using machine learning to identify previously overlooked exoplanets. "We confirmed the planet using traditional techniques, but our models directed us to run those simulations and showed us exactly where the planet might be," said lead author of the study Jason Terry in a release. "When we applied our models to a set of older observations, they identified a disk that wasn't known to have a planet despite having already been analyzed. Like previous discoveries, we ran simu

"The End" Of Kim Jong Un? What The 'Washington Declaration' Means

If North Korea uses its nuclear weapons against the United States or its ally South Korea, it would be "the end" of Kim Jong Un's regime, Seoul and Washington announced this week. The stern threat comes as President Yoon Suk Yeol is on a six-day state visit to the United States, where he and his counterpart Joe Biden discussed ramping up the US security shield for South Korea in the face of the nuclear-armed North's increased missile tests. But how significant is the tough-sounding statement? AFP takes a look at what we know: What is it? The Washington Declaration boosts the US nuclear umbrella over South Korea. It includes the regular deployment of a US nuclear submarine to South Korea -- something that has not happened since the 1980s -- and other measures, including more information sharing in the event of a North Korean attack. But there are no plans to station US nuclear weapons in South Korea, and some analysts doubt the declaration's practical value.
